Chester Zoo

TMD are proud to have closely worked with Chester Zoo as Project Managers, Fabric Forensic and Lead Fabric design Consultants for the primary reinstatement works of Chester Zoo’s Monsoon habitat, following a tragic fire in late December 2018.

TMD worked in collaboration with (amongst others) BDP, Rider Levett Bucknall, Clancy, Davis French [as decontamination specialist consultants] and the wider zoo team.

John Turner Construction provided Principal Contractor Services for the project in concert with, amongst others, Novum the original turnkey roof specialist who performed the same task again on the truss and ETFE roof, James Mercer Group and Aspull Electrical for the damaged elements of the services in the building, Belfor for decontamination cleaning and Huck Tek for the aviary and primate specialist netting.

We were delighted that Practical Completion of those works was achieved in May 2020, largely to programme and within the predicted budget for what was a complex and unique project. This included managing the project works whilst two huge Sunda gharial crocodiles remained in residence in the middle of the site.

Following Practical Completion of the primary reinstatement works, the zoo directly managed the remaining planting and exhibit works to final completion with all of the tropical planting completed and residents brought back home in time for the reopening on 24 October 2020.

The primary reinstatement works included:

· removing roof trusses for offsite preparation, recoating and re-instating along with new ETFE roof “pillows”

· Strip out of all internal contaminated components (which could not otherwise be cleaned)

· De-contamination cleaning to all areas affected by the fire

· Reinstating all items stripped out including the rebuilding of the ‘Tripa Research Station’ exhibit centre

· M&E works generally to achieve the Monsoon Forest environment.

The project was a fascinating experience and, we believe, a demonstration of what can be achieved in adverse circumstances by having a collaborative project team across all consultant and contracting disciplines.
